The heat of the year is over in Malibu, and we’re looking forward to the sun setting a little earlier. Fall is a time of resetting on the vineyards as the vines bear no fruit and prepare for the (relative) chill of winter months.
An earlier sunset means we get to enjoy the majestic l’heure bleue a little bit earlier as the sun dips just below the Pacific horizon right around dinner time.
On our end of the West Coast, Fall is more of a feeling than a change in scenery. The vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow that dominate your local Starbucks aren’t exactly everywhere in Malibu, though that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy our fair share of PSLs.
What Malibu fall does have to offer is a spectrum of blues that will add some electric feeling to those breezy cerulean skies.
When I was a kid, indigo was the most frustrating color in my pack of Crayola. With the appearance of a dark blue, the waxy stick covered my paper in an unwanted shade of purple that was did not come as advertised.
Indigo will serve one much better when applied to denim rather than paper, however, and it’s the hip-casual color for coastal autumn.
Denim, especially high-quality denim, plays nicely with a blue that offers some iridescence like indigo. The natural variation in the fabric helps pull out the individual hues present in authentic indigo washes.
Characterized by a rich intensity of color, indigo denim can range from almost black to nearly true blue, pairing well with the dressier or more casual affairs that are filling up your fall calendar.
Add an indigo denim jacket to your wardrobe this fall, and dare to mix your shades of denim for threads that will stand out from the dime-a-dozen dark red sweaters.
Following up on some small time success with Happy Little Pill, Aussie YouTube music star Troye Sivan is approaching the release of his third music video in a powerful trilogy called “Blue Neighbourhood,” named after the title track on his extended play album Wild, released in early September.
With this video series, Sivan has delivered a compelling story and fresh aesthetics to match a brilliant electro-pop album that serves as a great soundtrack to your autumn sunsets and crisp evenings with a glass of spicy chardonnay. At just over 23 minutes, the EP is a great iPod addition for and early morning or late afternoon walk to enjoy the milder temperatures.
Kind of Blue
In our repertoire of fall blues, we’d have been remiss to leave out this Miles Davis classic that has dominated the popular jazz canon since its release. With relaxed, delightful trumpet, up-tempo piano and some atmospheric cymbals, this quadruple platinum album should be a staple for your evening cocktail hours.
Bleu de Chanel
Men, it’s time to step up your game in the scent department. Get rid of your Axe, Bodor whatever else you might’ve been using since middle school and welcome in fall with Bleu de Chanel, one of the most popular scents for men from one of fashion’s biggest names.
Billed as “a striking balance of timeless woody aromatic notes and resolutely innovative elements,” this will appeal to a more potent sense when you walk in a room.
It’s not as friendly on the wallet as your go-to body sprays, but it is a worthwhile investment to set yourself apart this autumn.
To round out the blues to add to your autumnal collection, here’s one for the heart. Impress your hipster friends—the ones who attend poetry jams and spoken word nights—and brush up on some classic poetry with Robert Frost’s of two quatrains, “Fragmentary Blue.” Frost’s traditional lofty cadence and incisive questions about nature pose some challenging philosophical notions about our fascination with the the color blue. It’s short enough to store away in the back of your mind.
Why make so much of fragmentary blue
In here and there a bird, or butterfly,
Or flower, or wearing-stone, or open eye,
When heaven presents in sheets the solid hue?
Since earth is earth, perhaps, not heaven (as yet)--
Though some savants make earth include the sky;
And blue so far above us comes so high,
It only gives our wish for blue a whet.
Immerse yourself in an azure autumn, and channel a smoother side of style this fall.
