About three hours east of our home here in Malibu is the Coachella Valley. It’s home to one of America’s most celebrated music festivals, and is a venue par excellence for debuting trendsetting summer fashions.
This year’s look, and our suggestion for a summer style, is a highly referential take on 1990s punk-inspired vintage. Cinched with accessories, it’s a look built for summer, but ever-so-cool.
The purists would have you go for high-waisted shorts, but the denim shirt dress is a more comfortable option that will set you apart. You’ll likely find “denim” or chambray dresses in pale blues and washed out tones, perfect for making your summer tan stand out.
We suggest you wear it tied at the waist with an oversized leather belt. It’s a stylish canvas that you can dress up for summer nights out or dress down for lunch in the park.
If you caught a glimpse of Coachella, there are a handful of things I can promise you’ll see this summer, ladies: chokers (yes, even those weird accordion ones), retro round sunglasses and rings.
When you tone down the threads with blacks, blues and neutrals, you have free reign to amp up the accessory game. Bright lenses on Lennon-esque sunglasses pop against simple black turtleneck tops. Chokers contrast perfectly with flowing dresses and give a surprisingly cool nod to the days of Cobain.
Sorry, Shonda fans; this summer’s look is not inspired by Pope and Associates. Ditch the summer white and get yourself a stiff wide brim black hat (more American Horror Story: Coven, less Pharrell). Again, the black hat serves as something you can accessorize with feathers, leather bands, or even a trendy brooch. It’s a customizable piece that ensures you’re in with the trends, but still uniquely you. Plus, the added shade will keep your face sun-kissed, rather than burnt.
Be cool and chic this summer, and give a toast to the good life with Malibu Family Wines.
